City councilors in Aracaju held a debate on Tuesday morning regarding the establishment of a new cemetery in the capital of Sergipe. The discussion centers on a municipal decree published on October 29, which authorizes the expropriation of a 16,834.50 square meter plot in the Santo Antônio neighborhood. This land is currently occupied by the TV Atalaia station and its acquisition is backed by federal and municipal legislation concerning public utility.
The initiative aims to expand the capital's public funeral system and alleviate the current overload at the São João Batista Cemetery. Mayor Emília Corrêa stated via social media that the action seeks to address these capacity issues while ensuring that residents of the area are heard throughout the process. A public hearing is expected to take place on November 16 to gather input from local residents and parties involved in the expropriation proceedings.
The proposed facility is designed as a vertical and ecological model equipped with systems to prevent necrochorume from contacting the soil and to control gases resulting from decomposition. The planned structure will have a capacity for 5,000 niches and include six funeral rooms, an ossuary, an ecumenical center, contemplation spaces, restrooms, and parking. Additionally, the design includes preparations for the future construction of a second floor.
In response to the expropriation plans, TV Atalaia issued a statement affirming its understanding that it provides a service to the communities of Aracaju and Sergipe. The broadcaster also highlighted that the construction of a new cemetery has long been a demand from the State Public Ministry.
