King Philippe I received Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in audience after the failure of negotiations over the budget. De Wever submitted his resignation following the breakdown of the talks.
The Royal Palace said the king had reserved his decision on the resignation and would begin consultations with the leaders of the governing parties from the following day.
The monarch expressed regret that the parties had not reached an agreement on a credible budget suited to current challenges. The palace said Belgium was facing significant economic difficulties and considerable geopolitical uncertainty, making a prolonged political crisis unaffordable for the country.
