Belize has declared a state of emergency in 19 areas as the government responds to escalating violence linked to clashes between criminal gangs. The measure took effect on November 1 and covers parts of Belize City, several areas of Ladyville, and the towns of Cotton Tree and Unitedville in Cayo District.

Police Commissioner Richard Rosado said about 60 people had been identified as possible targets for detention based on investigative and intelligence information. He stressed that not all of them had been arrested. Authorities say clashes between criminal factions have intensified, leading to coordinated attacks and reprisals.

National Security Minister Michel Chebat announced the deployment of a special unit made up of police officers, military personnel and coast guard staff. The operation is intended to prevent further killings and dismantle criminal networks.
