Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said those responsible for a series of bomb attacks and armed assaults across the country would not escape punishment. The incidents took place overnight in several locations and targeted civilians and security forces, according to the president.
The violence affected the departments of Huila, Cauca and Tolima during the weekend. One bomb explosion killed four people, including a newborn, the report said.
De la Espriella vowed to maintain the pursuit of those responsible, dismantle their structures, disrupt their illicit economies and restore state control over territories affected by armed violence.
The president took office in August after pledging tougher security policies and an end to peace negotiations with armed groups initiated by his predecessor, progressive leader Gustavo Petro. Following the army’s first military operations, narco-guerrilla groups have unleashed one of the country’s largest waves of violence in the past decade, according to the report.
