Munich’s bid to host the Summer Olympics could have major consequences for the Oktoberfest, with plans for the U9 metro line potentially bringing years of construction to the festival grounds at the Theresienwiese.

The proposed line, which includes a new Esperantoplatz station, is part of the Olympic bid and is intended to ease pressure on the U3 and U6 lines. Construction could begin as early as 2029, prompting alarm among fairground operators.

The U9 project is still at the preliminary planning stage. Opening it in time for a possible 2036 Summer Olympics is considered unrealistic, while confidential documents reportedly outline potential effects of the work on the festival site.
