Global cryptocurrency markets experienced a significant downturn this Friday following a cyberattack on Binance, the world's leading crypto exchange. The platform announced on social media that it was investigating a security issue and had frozen $2.54 billion in assets as a precautionary measure.
According to reports from CNN International, the total value of assets stolen by hackers exceeds $6 billion, marking a new record for the largest heist of its kind. The news sent major digital currencies into a steep decline. By morning, Bitcoin had dropped 1.5% to trade at $77,624, having previously fallen more than 2%. Ethereum also suffered losses, dropping 3.27% to $2,244.6.
Investigators have pointed to North Korea as the likely perpetrator behind the attack, which allowed intruders to access digital wallets held on the Binance platform. In response, the company stated it is working around the clock to resolve the issue and pledged to cover all losses incurred by users. A statement posted on X promised a full post-incident report once the investigation concludes.
Binance emphasized that user funds remain secure and noted that its US headquarters were not affected by the security incident. The American operation clarified on social media that it operates as a separate and independent platform, with client funds and services continuing to function normally.
