Refrigeration systems at a supermarket in Reisbach, in Bavaria’s Dingolfing-Landau district, reportedly reached temperatures of up to 50 degrees. The store’s operator suspects a cyberattack and said on Facebook that large quantities of food had to be thrown away. Police are investigating, but have not confirmed that a cyberattack caused the incident, which occurred overnight into Monday.
The operator said internet connections are common in modern commercial refrigeration systems, allowing them to be monitored around the clock and staff to be alerted to problems. Foodsharing collected whatever products could still be salvaged, but most of the chilled goods had to be disposed of. The supermarket said it planned to restock its shelves with fresh products on Tuesday.
Police in Lower Bavaria said their investigation would involve coordination with authorities in other countries. Similar attacks have been reported at supermarkets in France, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Luxembourg, Estonia, Finland and the Netherlands. Police have not provided further details about the Reisbach case.
