Democratic figure Stevens has endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the race for Michigan's Senate seat, one of the most closely watched contests in Tuesday's US midterms. The support was announced at a joint appearance with Stevens, according to the report.
Rogers said at the event: "We have decided that hate sometimes becomes so loud that it endangers some of our citizens in this state." He also pointed to possible risks for Jewish citizens.
The report says the backdrop to the endorsement is likely the Republican and Trump-led portrayal of El-Sayed as a radical left "communist" and efforts to link him to Islamists. President Donald Trump has gone as far as calling El-Sayed a "radical jihadist", and Rogers has accused El-Sayed of an "extreme ideology".
The Michigan Senate race is one of the key battlegrounds in the midterms. In northern US border states such as Michigan and Maine, tariffs in the US-Canada trade dispute have also become a campaign issue ahead of Tuesday's vote.
