In the Michigan Senate race, one of the most closely watched contests in the upcoming midterms, Democrat Stevens has endorsed Republican Mike Rogers. The support was announced during a joint appearance with Rogers.
Speaking at the event, Rogers said: "We have decided that hate sometimes becomes so loud that it endangers some of our citizens in this state." He also referred to potential risks facing Jewish citizens.
The backdrop to the endorsement is that Republicans and US President Donald Trump have long portrayed El-Sayed, Rogers' Democratic opponent, as a radical left "communist" and sought to link him to Islamists. Trump has gone so far as to call him a "radical jihadist," and Rogers himself has accused El-Sayed of holding an "extreme ideology."
The midterm elections are scheduled for Tuesday. The Senate race in Michigan is considered a key battleground.
