The Democrats have secured a majority in the US Senate in the midterm elections, according to partial results and projections by the Associated Press and other US media. They are projected to hold at least 51 of the chamber’s 100 seats.
The opposition party took at least five seats from Republicans, in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, North Carolina and South Carolina. The result marks a major defeat for the party of President Donald Trump.
