According to the Municipal Autarchy of Traffic and Citizenship (AMC) in Fortaleza, a driver exhibiting signs of drunkenness and driving at high speed collided with a group of motorcyclists on the Via Expressa. The victims were stopped on the road to assist a colleague who had been knocked off his motorcycle moments earlier by another vehicle. Witnesses reported that the driver only slowed down after hitting the motorcycles.
The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, November 2. Thyerrison Pereira, a 21-year-old delivery worker, recounted that he and his partner were returning home with another couple on motorcycles and a friend riding alone. Upon reaching the Via Expressa above Antônio Sales Avenue, their friend was struck by a Chevrolet Classic attempting to overtake him. Following this initial crash, the two couples parked their bikes on the track with hazard lights activated to signal the danger.
Shortly after, another group of passing motorcyclists stopped to help the injured rider and also placed their motorcycles on the road as additional warning signals. Pereira stated that while other vehicles were able to swerve around the scene, a driver in a Renault Sandero approached at high speed, invaded the lane blocked by the bikes, and struck the group. "What stopped his car was not him braking, it was the motorcycles underneath," Pereira told g1.
The impact caused multiple injuries, with several people suffering abrasions. The man involved in the first accident was hit again by the Sandero. A woman was thrown from the overpass onto the lower roadway, falling approximately six meters. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Sandero appeared visibly intoxicated and refused to take a breathalyzer test. Pereira also noted that alcoholic beverages were found inside the vehicle.
At least four victims required medical attention, including the man from the initial accident and the woman thrown from the bridge. Three of these individuals remained hospitalized late Monday night, while the first victim was discharged early in the evening. The AMC reported that friends of the injured woman attempted to lynch the Sandero driver after the collision, forcing him to be taken to a hospital for his own safety. No updated official information regarding the health status of all the injured parties has been released.
