The European Union officially validated on Tuesday the acquisition of German electronics distributor Ceconomy by China's JD.com. This transaction grants JD.com control over Ceconomy, which serves as the parent company for major retail chains MediaMarkt and Saturn, and holds the position of the second-largest shareholder in the French group Fnac Darty.

Brussels had been investigating this acquisition project since May due to suspicions that JD.com might have benefited from foreign subsidies capable of distorting competition within the European market. The deal was ultimately approved under specific conditions following commitments made by both parties involved in the transaction.

JD.com, which ranks as the third-largest online commerce platform in China behind Alibaba and Temu, announced this acquisition plan in July 2025 for approximately 2.2 billion euros. The Chinese conglomerate is currently pursuing an aggressive international expansion strategy, particularly targeting the European market to offset slowing consumption and fierce price wars within its domestic economy.

The announcement of this transaction initially raised concerns in France regarding the future implications for Fnac Darty, a group that plays a major role in the distribution of cultural products. However, after several months of inquiry, Brussels praised the constructive approach of the parties involved. The European Commission concluded that the commitments reached effectively address the identified foreign subsidies and their potential distorting effects on the internal market.
