Alberto Núñez Feijóo is sticking with a campaign centered on management and policy proposals, presenting that approach as an alternative to what he described as a PSOE focused on political spectacle. The PP leader said his strategy had not changed following the fatal accident in Urda, Toledo, and argued that it was other parties that needed to adjust their approach.

Speaking after a meeting with the PP’s national leadership and regional presidents, Feijóo said public services had deteriorated under Pedro Sánchez despite record tax revenues. He also accused the government of handling the aftermath of the Urda accident with an eye on political power and criticized what he said was its focus on polling when considering whether to dismiss Transport Minister Óscar Puente.

Feijóo argued that the families of victims and injured people, rather than the minister, were facing the real ordeal. He said that, if he were making the decision, Sánchez would appear before parliament’s Permanent Deputation and Puente would already have been removed from office.

The PP leader offered what he called an alternative based on management, rigor and experience, saying a government should solve problems rather than avoid them. He also said the public needed full information about the accident and what improvements might be needed.

Feijóo renewed a pledge to audit the rail network if he becomes prime minister and redirect investment towards maintenance and infrastructure renewal rather than opening new lines. In a television interview, he also reiterated a commitment to invest 300 billion euros in transport, energy and water infrastructure, and said he wanted an engineer to serve as transport minister.

The PP plans to continue with its existing campaign strategy, focusing on sector-specific proposals. Feijóo said he was uncomfortable with what he called empty political spectacle. The party believes his management-focused profile could appeal to PSOE and Vox voters, as well as undecided and new voters. It is particularly focused on attracting people who backed Sánchez in 2023; party figures put the current transfer of PSOE voters to the PP at around 8%, while acknowledging that the impact of the accident on voting intentions remains uncertain.

Feijóo is due to resume campaign events on Saturday in Valladolid, where Puente was previously mayor and is the PSOE candidate, according to the article.
