A fire broke out in a forest area at the entrance to Cachoeira do Arari, in Brazil’s Marajó region, on Monday night. The blaze also affected a rice field near a fuel station, according to the information released about the incident.
Wind carried smoke across the area and blew glowing embers toward other locations. The fire’s glow could be seen from several kilometres away.
The municipality said the situation was being brought under control. Civil firefighters were at the site monitoring the blaze and in contact with the Fire Department in Salvaterra. A team of military firefighters was also on its way.
The municipality said a firefighting unit would arrive on Tuesday and remain for as long as needed to monitor the situation.
