Francis Joyon was rescued by a cargo ship on Monday night after capsizing in the Celtic Sea during the Route du Rhum, race organisers said. The skipper was competing in the vintage trimaran category.

The Maersk Colombus rescued Joyon at 11 p.m., according to the organisers. He was reported to be well and travelling aboard the ship to Ireland, where he was expected to disembark in the following hours.

Joyon won the Route du Rhum in 2018.
