Peaceful protests in Germany over the cost of living turned violent and led to looting late on Saturday, with unrest reported in several cities.

Thousands had joined largely orderly demonstrations across Germany earlier in the day. The rallies were organised by the campaign group Gen Z regelt, which means "Gen Z takes charge".

In central Frankfurt, rioters looted shops as clashes broke out. German authorities said at least 54 people were arrested in Frankfurt and more than 100 police officers were injured.

Violence also flared in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, in addition to Frankfurt, Germany's financial hub.

The unrest comes amid protests across Europe over rising living costs, poor public services and a lack of affordable housing. The BBC's world correspondent Joe Inwood reports on the developments.
