After the weekend's Gen-Z protests concluded, which were described as largely peaceful, isolated incidents of rioting occurred in several cities. The German federal government is now engaged in a dispute over who bears primary responsibility for these disturbances, with particular disagreement surrounding the role of young people from migrant backgrounds.
Education Minister Karin Prien has called for improved integration efforts. Speaking to Deutschlandfunk, the CDU politician acknowledged that while there were violent excesses by left-radical groups following the demonstrations, violence also came from others who likely originate from migrant milieus. Prien emphasized that her comments are not intended to stir up resentment, which she deemed politically incorrect, but rather to address the reality of why individuals resort to such means.
Prien argued that if these individuals come from migrant backgrounds, it should be a cause for concern and necessitate an examination of the underlying causes. She framed the issue around understanding why certain people have not successfully integrated into society and what measures are needed to improve this in the future. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU echoed similar sentiments, stating on Sunday that the peaceful demonstrations had been hijacked by violent left-wing groups and "migrant hooligans."
A prominent counter-voice has emerged from the SPD through Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who questioned Dobrindt's phrasing. Pistorius asked what is meant by "migrant groups," specifically inquiring if this refers to people living in Germany for three generations who hold German citizenship. He argued that failing to differentiate leads in the wrong direction.
While Pistorius stated he does not know if migrants are responsible for the riots and would not rule it out, he insisted on precise terminology. He refused to label the perpetrators as mere "hooligans," calling them criminals and offenders who attacked and injured police officers and committed serious property damage. Regardless of their background, Pistorius asserted that those responsible must ultimately be punished.
