Germany’s Federal Convention is scheduled to elect a new federal president on January 30, 2027. The vote could result in the country’s first woman holding the office, but no official candidate has yet been put forward.

The CDU claims the right to nominate a candidate, although Chancellor and CDU leader Friedrich Merz has not yet presented a proposal. He is expected to wait until after November 9 and to hold further discussions with the SPD and the Greens before making a decision.

Four women are currently being discussed as potential candidates for the presidency. It remains unclear whether any of them is Merz’s preferred choice, although he has recently expressed support for a woman taking the position.
