Grêmio defeated Atlético-MG 2-0 on Sunday at the Arena do Grêmio in Porto Alegre, taking a significant advantage in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil semifinal. Carlos Vinícius and Noriega scored for the home side.

The opening goal came in the 10th minute. Weverton’s goal kick reached Carlos Vinícius, who controlled the ball, cut inside and finished into the net. Atlético-MG responded seven minutes later when Renan Lodi crossed low from the left and Bernard’s shot was blocked by the defense.

Atlético-MG had more possession during the first half, but created few clear opportunities. Grêmio goalkeeper Weverton made several important saves to preserve his team’s lead before the break.

Grêmio doubled its advantage shortly after the start of the second half. Enamorado and João Pedro combined on the right, and João Pedro sent a low cross into the area. Noriega arrived unmarked and scored with a first-time finish.

Atlético-MG pressed forward in search of a response but was unable to score. Grêmio finished the match with 10 players after Gustavo Martins was sent off for a second yellow card late in the game.

The teams will meet again on November 7 at 6 p.m. Brasília time at Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte. Grêmio can advance to the final even with a one-goal defeat. Atlético-MG must win by three goals to qualify directly, while a two-goal victory would send the tie to a penalty shootout.
