House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said his party had retaken control of Congress on Tuesday, November 3, after election results favored Democrats across the United States. CNN projections showed the party winning majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and Jeffries could become the first Black man to serve as House speaker.

Democrats won in states long considered beyond their reach, including Republican strongholds South Carolina, Texas and Iowa. The projected victories also included at least six Republican-held Senate seats, enough to give Democrats a majority even if they lose their own seats in competitive Michigan and Minnesota.

Speaking alongside Representative Katherine Clark, who is expected to become the next House majority leader, Jeffries pledged that lawmakers would work to make the country more affordable. He said a Democratic-led Congress would answer to voters, rather than the president, vice president or Supreme Court.
