An Indian tourist was killed when two small helicopters collided and crashed as they attempted to land at a snowy site in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district on Tuesday, police said. A 53-year-old New Zealander was injured and taken by air to Kathmandu for further treatment.
The tourist, who was 47, died at the scene, said Nabin Raja Budhathoki, head of Solukhumbu District Police. Arrangements were being made to transport the body to the capital. Both pilots survived.
Small helicopters are commonly used in Nepal to carry tourists, climbers and supplies, as well as for emergency evacuations. The country’s difficult terrain and rapidly changing weather make flying especially hazardous.
