The new academic year has brought a sharp rise in university costs for non-European students in France. Since September, registration fees have been multiplied by sixteen for foreign students from outside the European Union.

The new rate does not apply to European students. Non-European students are now required to pay an amount described as equivalent to the average French salary, placing a significant financial burden on those pursuing higher education in the country.

African students are among those most affected by the measure. They represent nearly half of all foreign students in France, according to the information presented in the report.

Hamit Wachi Allatchi, a Chadian student and president of the Collective of Non-European Students at the University of Strasbourg, has described the increase as discriminatory. He discussed the policy and its consequences as a guest on the Africa Midi programme.
