China put its latest robotics technology to the test on Monday, 2 November, as nearly 90 teams took part in the CMG World Robot Mount Tai Challenge in Tai’an, Shandong Province.

Humanoid, quadruped and exoskeleton robots faced a 3.9-kilometre stretch of ancient mountain path, climbing 3,100 stone steps and gaining 600 metres in elevation. The course included steep slopes, long stairways and sharp bends.

The uneven steps and inclines tested the machines’ balance and ability to navigate difficult terrain. Some quadruped robots also transported food supplies along the route.

Several machines reached the finish line as spectators watched the unusual challenge, which turned one of China’s best-known mountain routes into a testing ground for robotics research and engineering.
