U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have publicized arrests of noncitizens accused of voting or registering to vote in previous elections. The agencies warned that federal authorities would track down and arrest anyone who votes illegally in this year’s midterm elections.

ICE posted on X: “If you vote illegally, we will find you. We will track you down, arrest you and prosecute you. There will be no escape.”

In the weeks before this year’s elections, DHS highlighted arrests involving people accused of registering to vote or casting ballots in past elections. The report notes that election fraud, including voting by non-U.S. citizens, is extremely rare, despite claims by the Trump administration and DHS that it is widespread.

Officials initially said that thousands of noncitizens had voted in previous elections, but those figures did not hold up under closer scrutiny.
