The resignation of author Juli Zeh from her role as a judge at the Brandenburg State Constitutional Court has placed the state in a difficult political situation. Zeh stepped down from her position prematurely citing professional overload, which has now made finding a successor a significant political challenge.
The search for a replacement is complicated by the fact that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party holds a blocking minority within the legislative framework. This dynamic threatens to stall the appointment process and create ongoing instability for the court.
This development occurs against the backdrop of shifting political alliances in Brandenburg. Social Democrat Björn Lüttmann has led his faction since March, maintaining balance within a two-year coalition government. Prior to early 2026, his counterpart was Niels-Olaf Lüders of the BSW faction. Following a rupture between the parties at that time, the SPD is now governing in a coalition with the CDU.
