British adventurer Karl Bushby returned to his hometown of Kingston-upon-Hull in northeastern England on Monday after completing a 28-year journey around the world on foot. Several hundred people gathered to welcome the 57-year-old former British Army parachutist.
Bushby estimated that he had covered around 50,000 kilometers during the expedition. Speaking from a podium outside the town hall, he said the achievement had depended on the support of many people who helped him overcome obstacles, including visa refusals and the crossing of the English Channel.
He began the journey in southern Chile in 1998, at the age of 29, following the failure of his marriage and his former wife’s move to Northern Ireland with their son, according to the provided account. Bushby had set himself two conditions for the challenge: he would not use any form of transport to advance, and he would not return home until he had completed the expedition.
