New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is projected to win a second full term, defeating Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman, according to CNN. The state is a Democratic stronghold.
Hochul took office in August 2021 after then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned, becoming the first woman to lead New York. She was elected to the position in 2022.
During her tenure, Hochul has clashed with the Trump administration over issues including tolls and immigration. She has also developed a strong working relationship with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a fellow Democrat.
Hochul’s career has been focused largely on local government, with a brief stint in Congress. Before becoming governor, she served for 14 years as a town council member in Hamburg and later held a county government position. Her work has also included women’s rights: she and her mother founded an initiative to support women experiencing domestic violence.
