Kimi Antonelli was crowned Formula 1 World Champion on Sunday evening after securing third place at the Mexican Grand Prix. Although the Mercedes driver only required a ninth-place finish to clinch the title, his podium result behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton proved more than sufficient. Upon crossing the finish line, an emotional Antonelli spoke over the radio in tears, stating simply, "We did it. Thank you very much."
After composing himself, the 20-year-old Italian driver, who is now the youngest World Champion in history, gave an interview to Canal+. He revealed that his vision was impaired during the final lap due to overwhelming emotion. "To be honest, on the last lap I had to slow down a bit because I was having trouble seeing the track," Antonelli explained. "I was already full of emotion, so happy. Happy to have won the title." He also extended his gratitude to his team, family, and friends for their support throughout the journey.
Antonelli described the moment as special, noting that he would print an image of the celebration to keep in his home forever. He expressed deep respect for Verstappen and Hamilton, two drivers he had admired since his youth, after they carried him in triumph on the podium to celebrate his championship victory.
