Latvia's Armed Forces reported a brief incursion into the country's airspace near its borders with Belarus and Russia on Sunday, and urged people in the region to remain at home for their safety while the incident was under way.
In a message posted on X, the military warned of a threat in the airspace and told the public not to approach any low-flying or suspicious object they might see. About 30 minutes later, the armed forces said the unidentified object had left Latvian airspace and that the threat had ended.
The episode comes amid wider concern in the region over incursions by Ukrainian military drones into the airspace of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Those incidents have fed worries that the war in Ukraine could spill over into NATO countries that border Russia and its ally Belarus.
According to the account, Ukraine's strikes on Russian oil transport ports in the Baltic Sea have at times seen drones miss their targets and trigger security alerts in neighbouring countries. In Latvia, the source states, this led to the fall of the government earlier this year.
Moscow has accused Kyiv of using NATO airspace as cover for attacks, while Kyiv says some of its drones have been diverted from their course by Russian signal interference.
