Macau’s Judiciary Police (PJ) and Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária have discussed ways to strengthen cooperation against terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering and cybercrime, according to a statement from the Macau force.

Macau police director Chong Meng met with senior Portuguese PJ officials, including national director Carlos Cabreiro. The two sides discussed high-risk crimes and possible cooperation in counterterrorism, tackling narcotics trafficking, money laundering and cybercrime.

The forces also considered strengthening information-sharing, providing joint staff training and expanding crime-prevention awareness initiatives at Portuguese-language educational institutions in Macau.

Portuguese is one of Macau’s two official languages, alongside Chinese. The region has public schools where Portuguese is a language of instruction, as well as the Macau Portuguese School, which was established in 1998 and is managed by a foundation involving the Portuguese state, the Oriente Foundation and the Association for the Promotion of Macanese Instruction.
