A 60-year-old man whose identity was not disclosed was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking at the Public Market in Bom Jesus, in southern Piauí, on Sunday, Nov. 1. The arrest took place during a patrol by officers from the 4th Company of the Interior Special Policing Battalion (BEPI), according to the Piauí Public Security Secretariat (SSP-PI).
Police said the team went to the market after receiving reports from local residents about possible drug sales at the location. At the scene, officers found narcotics exposed on a table at a bar, the secretariat said. Authorities seized five portions of a substance similar to cocaine, two portions of crack, a precision scale, three cellphones and cash.
During the operation, the man's 37-year-old nephew also was arrested. According to the SSP-PI, he presented himself to the officers, and a check of his personal data revealed an open arrest warrant against him. The reasons for the warrant were not disclosed.
The 60-year-old man was taken to the Civil Police station in Bom Jesus along with the seized material. His nephew was also taken to the station so the judicial order could be carried out.
