Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested a man suspected of robbing the 89-year-old mother of Badalona mayor Xavier García Albiol several weeks ago, police sources said Tuesday. A second suspect has not yet been located, and the investigation remains open.

Albiol said two men took money from his mother shortly after she had withdrawn it from an ATM, as she was arriving home. He praised the police for making the arrest and shared a video on X thanking the officers for their work.

According to police sources, the suspects allegedly used the “stain” distraction technique: they soil a victim’s clothing without their knowledge, then steal from them while appearing to help clean it.

Albiol called for changes to the law to allow tougher action against people who commit such offences, including the possibility of deportation. He condemned the alleged attack on an elderly woman who uses a walking stick.
