Portugal’s Maritime Police assisted 11 people aboard a recreational vessel that ran aground on the Douro River near Peso da Régua on Tuesday, the National Maritime Authority said. The vessel became stranded after deviating from the navigation channel.

The people aboard were found to be in good physical condition and did not require medical care. Police transported them to the Peso da Régua quay with help from boats nearby.

The vessel’s owner was notified that a removal plan must be submitted. The boat cannot return to navigation until it has undergone an inspection to confirm it is seaworthy.

The alert was received at 1:38 p.m. from the Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo Ports Administration. Maritime Police officers, Peso da Régua Volunteer Firefighters and the ports administration were mobilised. The Douro Local Maritime Police Command handled the incident.
