The Mexican Grand Prix was interrupted on lap 46 on Sunday after a heavy crash involving Cadillac driver Valtteri Bottas.
Bottas was at full speed at the end of the pit straight and preparing to brake for Turn 1 when his front-left suspension broke outright, according to the available information. His car went into a skid before crashing violently against protective barriers.
Bottas, who appeared dazed, needed a few minutes to get out of the cockpit. He managed to extract himself from the car and was taken to the medical centre as a precaution for checks, Cadillac said.
After the safety car was deployed, a red flag was shown so the damaged car could be evacuated and the barriers repaired.
At the time of the stoppage, Max Verstappen was leading ahead of Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton. Antonelli, who was expected to be crowned world champion at the end of the Grand Prix, had just pitted for tyres and handed the lead to Verstappen.
Hamilton had started from pole position but was overtaken early in the race by his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc and by Verstappen.
A new start will be given for the remaining 25 laps. Hamilton, who pitted during the interruption, will start third ahead of Antonelli because that was his position when the accident occurred, the stewards said.
