Rome hosted celebrations of Mexico’s Día de Muertos from October 30 to November 1 in an initiative promoted by the Embassy of Mexico in Italy and led by Ambassador Genaro Lozano.

The programme opened with a commemorative altar dedicated to historic female figures, including Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti. During the inaugural evening, attendees shared traditional specialities and listened to live music.

The celebrations later moved into the heart of the capital with a parade from Piazza Barberini to Piazza del Popolo. Elegantly dressed skeletons walked through the streets to the sound of mariachi music, while passers-by and tourists joined in, some wearing Día de Muertos-themed makeup.

The event highlighted a tradition that UNESCO recognised as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008.
