Nicolas Cage says he is currently living in hotels after being forced to leave his Malibú home because of a sinkhole near the property. The actor shared the update at Los Angeles Comic Con, according to ¡Hello! magazine, adding that he was disappointed not to have his children with him for Halloween as usual.
The sinkhole was reported on September 8 at the entrance to Cage’s mansion. The ground reportedly continued to give way, prompting an evacuation while the damage and risks to the property were assessed. A gas pipe was also damaged during the incident, increasing concerns for residents in the area.
Malibú declared a local state of emergency and restricted access to the affected area. Authorities are assessing the ground and structural risks to determine when repairs can safely proceed. Emergency crews have used sandbags near neighboring homes to limit the spread of the damage.
Evacuation orders reportedly remain in place for 31 properties after the neighborhood’s only access road was cut off. The city has authorized emergency debris removal, while the homeowners’ association seeks permits for ground repairs. Cage has not been given permission to return, and no timeline for his return has been established.
