A nine-year-old girl was injured in Germany after a needle was hidden inside a chocolate bar distributed during Halloween celebrations. The incident occurred in the Rotenburg district of Lower Saxony, according to police reports cited by Dpa.

The object, described as a five-centimetre pin, caused an injury to the girl’s tongue. Authorities have not disclosed the severity of the wound.

Police have also reported needles, screws and other metal objects concealed in Halloween sweets in several German states, including Thuringia, Bremen, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. A similar discovery was reported in Austria.

In several states, police said the packages intended for children appeared to have been deliberately tampered with. Authorities urged caution when consuming products collected on 31 October from venues, restaurants and neighbours.
