A new media initiative titled "Manual de Instruções para Humanos" (Instruction Manual for Humans) has been launched by the Portuguese news outlet Observador. The series is hosted by journalist Sara Antunes de Oliveira, deputy director of the publication, and psychiatrist Gustavo Jesus, head of the Psychiatry and Mental Health Department at ULS Estuário do Tejo. The program aims to answer the central question of how individuals can lead lives that are less anxious, less depressed, and happier.

The format is designed as a conversation rather than a traditional interview, allowing the hosts to deconstruct myths and clarify doubts regarding complex mental health topics using simple language. Early episodes address specific issues such as the impact of acute stress on the immune system, the potential dangers of advice given by sleep influencers, and the increased risk of stroke or heart attack in surviving spouses following a partner's death. The series also explores the scientific explanations behind emotional hunger and the distinction between general pain and clinical trauma.

Episodes are scheduled to air every Sunday at 13:10 on Rádio Observador and are immediately available as podcasts on the outlet's website and other standard platforms. This new rubric replaces a previous format known as "O Médico dos Malucos e outros Mitos sobre Saúde Mental," which often left listeners asking for full versions of episodes that were already complete. Consequently, the new series features longer content in both video and audio formats to encourage deeper engagement.

The creators are actively inviting audience participation, encouraging readers to submit questions and topic suggestions via email at manual@observador.pt. The initiative seeks to provide new perspectives on daily life issues that impact mental well-being, fostering a community where listeners can share their reactions and engage with the material.
