Police in Bavaria collected around 250 metal objects from the A9 motorway between Allersberg and Hilpoltstein after nails, screws and metal angle brackets caused tyre damage to a large number of drivers. Investigators believe the items were deliberately thrown onto the carriageway.
Several motorists reported damaged tyres on Saturday evening. Both directions of travel were affected between the Nuremberg-Ost motorway junction and the Hilpoltstein exit in the district of Roth, and some vehicles had to be towed because of the damage.
During subsequent patrols, officers found significant quantities of metal parts at several points, mainly on the right-hand lane, at entry and exit slip roads and on the hard shoulder. Police are now investigating on suspicion of dangerous interference in road traffic.
According to initial findings, the metal parts may have been thrown deliberately from a vehicle by a passenger while it was moving. It remains unclear who was responsible, and police have opened an investigation into the suspected dangerous interference in road traffic.
