The Portuguese automotive market recorded significant growth in the first ten months of 2026, with a total of 241,293 new vehicles placed into circulation. According to data released by the Portuguese Automobile Association (ACAP) on Monday, this figure represents a 9.9% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Breaking down the monthly performance, October alone saw 20,367 vehicle registrations, reflecting a 2.4% rise over October 2025. Within the broader ten-month accumulation, the passenger car segment was particularly robust, with 205,507 new light passenger vehicles registered, up 9.5% year-over-year.

A defining characteristic of this growth is the shift toward alternative energy sources. ACAP reported that 77.5% of newly registered light passenger vehicles were powered by electricity or hybrid systems. Meanwhile, the market for light commercial vehicles also expanded, advancing 10.4% to reach 28,315 units during the same ten-month period.

Heavy vehicle registrations showed even stronger growth over the cumulative period, rising 19.6% to total 7,471 units compared to the same timeframe in 2025. However, the heavy vehicle sector experienced a sharp contraction specifically in October, dropping 46.6% to just 590 vehicles when compared to the previous year. In contrast, light commercial vehicle registrations for that specific month surged by 20.4%, reaching 3,182 units.
