Matt Kufta, a supporter of the Republican Party, said the party’s poor election results were foreseeable because Donald Trump had promised to reduce the cost of living and end wars but, in his view, prices continued to rise while the United States became involved in more conflicts. Kufta said he had expected Republicans to lose control of Congress.
He acknowledged that some of Trump’s first-year actions, including reducing illegal immigration, had appealed to voters. But he argued that the president later turned towards personal projects and issues that did not make much difference to Americans’ everyday lives, leaving him disconnected from the public.
Kufta said the party now needed to consider its identity beyond Trump, after years in which the former president had dominated Republican politics. He hopes Republicans will distance themselves somewhat from Trump and reconsider the party’s principles. He described its pre-Trump priorities as lower taxes, more trade and wars undertaken when necessary.
Among the results that surprised him, Kufta pointed to Texas and South Carolina. He said voters were focused on household budgets and recalled being shocked by prices during a visit to the United States two weeks earlier. He cited restaurant costs, saying that a dinner for two that had been around $100 five years ago could now exceed $250, with wine costing at least $150.
Kufta also linked higher fuel costs to the war in Iran, saying that much of US commerce depends on trucks. He called the conflict a major political problem for Republicans but said ending it would be complicated. In his view, many Americans see prices rising without understanding the global issues behind them, while people in rural areas may be more focused on their immediate circumstances.
