The Königsjodler on Austria’s Hochkönig is one of the longest and most challenging via ferratas in the Eastern Alps. The route involves around 1,700 metres of ascent, narrow mountain notches, exposed ridges and strenuous climbing over the Teufelshörndl and Kummetstein.
Even in optimal conditions, with dry rock and mild temperatures, experienced mountain athletes need 12 to 13 hours for the ascent and descent. Three young men entered the demanding route as fresh snow fell. When one of them could no longer continue, the other two carried on without him, and a dramatic rescue operation began.
