Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said public trust in the country’s high-speed rail system had been lost, as the government works to prevent another tragedy of this scale.

Speaking to the media in Urda, in the province of Toledo, Sánchez said the government’s task was not only to assess what had happened but also to provide solutions. He made the remarks after attending a meeting of the emergency coordination centre concerning a rail accident that killed 69 people.

Sánchez referred to comments made the previous day by King Felipe VI and said the government was focused on ensuring that a tragedy of this magnitude does not happen again.
