Serbia has marked the second anniversary of the Novi Sad railway station collapse, with thousands of students and supporters marching through the rain to honour the 16 people who died in the tragedy.

The silent procession ended outside the station, where participants laid wreaths and placed red hearts bearing the victims’ names. Others lit candles in their memory. The concrete canopy above the station entrance collapsed on 1 November 2024 in the northern Serbian city, killing 16 people.

The disaster triggered a student-led movement demanding accountability and an investigation into alleged corruption and negligence during the station’s renovation. Thirteen people, including a former government minister, have been charged, but proceedings have not yet begun.

The commemoration took place one week after the movement’s Student List won Serbia’s snap parliamentary election on 25 October, defeating the bloc led by Aleksandar Vučić. Preliminary results gave the students 140 of the 250 seats in parliament.

Those attending the memorial in Novi Sad said the election result had raised hopes that the case would move forward and that those responsible would be held accountable.
