A shooting in Moss Landing, a small coastal community in Monterey County, California, has left several people dead and others injured. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on November 2, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, which said an investigation is under way.
Sheriff’s officials have not disclosed the exact number of victims or provided details about the circumstances of the shooting. They have also not said whether a suspect or suspects have been arrested. Andy Rosas, of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, said there is no longer an active threat to the community.
Deputies and detectives were at the scene on Jetty Road, the road leading toward Moss Landing State Beach. California State Parks police closed the road and the beach at the sheriff’s office’s request. Authorities said no further information would be released for the time being because the investigation remains active.
Moss Landing is a small coastal community on Monterey Bay, around 25 kilometers north of Monterey. The area is known for fishing, its former canning industry, tourism, whale-watching and a frequently visited state recreational park.
The shooting occurred days after another incident in Fairfield, north of San Francisco, where a gunman opened fire inside a store selling Halloween products and costumes. One woman, 31-year-old Constance Hages, was killed and six other people were injured, three critically, according to the information available in the original report.
It also follows a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where a 16-year-old former student allegedly killed three children with special needs and a 25-year-old teacher. Authorities in Moss Landing have not indicated whether the incidents are connected.
