Six ministers from Les Républicains serving in Sébastien Lecornu’s government are calling for an urgent effort to unite candidates from the right and centre. They are concerned about the growing number of candidates within their political family and are preparing a common position to promote greater cohesion.

The group includes Annie Genevard, minister for Agriculture; Nicolas Forissier, minister for Foreign Trade; Sébastien Martin, minister for the Economy; Jean-Didier Berger, minister delegate attached to the Interior minister; Philippe Tabarot, minister for Transport; and Vincent Jeanbrun, minister for Housing.

Although they have been suspended from the party led by Bruno Retailleau, the six ministers continue to affirm their attachment to Les Républicains. They say they are acting in the national interest and reject the idea that they should be excluded because they declined to follow the party’s demand to support a single candidate, separate from a Macron-aligned political camp they consider highly damaging.

Jean-Didier Berger referred humorously to the suspension, saying that it was “the destiny of angels” to be suspended. The ministers argue that the right has regained political influence and visibility after losing some of its previous weight.

Nicolas Forissier has reacted strongly to criticism of their position. The six ministers meet for dinner at the beginning of each month to discuss their responsibilities and current political affairs, according to the report.
