Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente has resigned following a rail incident in Urda, in the province of Toledo, that killed at least 69 people on October 28. He has also withdrawn as the Socialist lead candidate for Valladolid in the general election scheduled for November 29.

Puente announced his decision after a four-hour hearing before the Permanent Deputation of Spain’s Congress of Deputies concerning the incident. “I want to announce that I am resigning not only as Minister of Transport, but also as the Socialist lead candidate for Valladolid in the general election on November 29,” he said.
