Sporting have changed coaches in mid-season, replacing Rui Borges with Paulo Fonseca. Tiago Fernandes will oversee the team on an interim basis and is due to lead Sporting in the European match against Shakhtar in London before Fonseca assumes the role on Wednesday.
The decision follows a period in which confidence in Borges had weakened. The decisive blow, according to the commentators, was Sporting’s defeat by Torreense in the Portuguese Cup final. The result was viewed as particularly damaging because the club had renewed its confidence in Borges after he had previously won the league and the Portuguese Cup.
Pedro Henriques argued that the final loss cost Borges much of the credit he had built up. He also pointed to Sporting’s repeated failures to protect leads and its difficulty against rivals such as Porto, Benfica and Braga as factors behind the growing distrust among supporters.
The change has also been linked to the club’s major squad overhaul. Luís Pinto Coelho said Sporting’s structure should have considered changing coaches at the end of the previous season, when the decision to rebuild the squad was made. In his view, leaving Borges in charge for several more months may have damaged the club’s league ambitions.
Fonseca arrives from Lyon, where he leaves the team in third place after a weekend victory and an emotional farewell. The Portuguese coach has worked in several countries and previously managed clubs including Porto, Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma, Milan and Lille.
The panel described Fonseca as a more experienced option, while also recalling questions raised during some of his previous appointments about his leadership and communication. Gabriel Alves cited his time at Milan as an example of difficulties managing internal situations, while Henriques said Sporting’s most urgent need was clear leadership and a different communication style.
Despite those reservations, the commentators generally viewed the appointment as a theoretical improvement for Sporting. They also suggested that the club’s title hopes had already been weakened, making the arrival of a new coach a difficult but necessary attempt to restore stability.
Fonseca’s first challenge will come in a season in which Sporting are trying to recover ground in the standings. The club’s next domestic match mentioned in the programme is against Benfica, with Alverca visiting the Estádio da Luz in the closing fixture of the league round.
