A resident of St. Petersburg has asked a court to annul a death certificate issued in his name by mistake in December 2024 and restore his civil rights, according to a statement from the city’s court press service cited by Kommersant. The statement said Oleg was asking the court to correct the situation and “resurrect” him in the official records.
Court documents say a man’s body was found in a St. Petersburg apartment in November 2024 and identified as Oleg using a military certificate. The man was actually Oleg’s brother, who had been treated at Skvortsov-Stepanov Hospital in the city and had been discharged, according to Russian newspaper OSN.
Oleg, who works as a street sweeper, learned of the case from his son, who had accessed police reports about the discovery of the body. He still has his passport, but the death registration prevents him from using it as identification or carrying out financial transactions.
The registration has also affected his ability to exercise electoral, pension, healthcare, employment and property rights, the report said.
