The individual responsible for the armed assault on a firefighter during an active operation in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, near Marseille, was presented to an investigating judge on Tuesday. The attack occurred on Sunday while emergency crews were extinguishing a fire involving a heavy truck and light vehicles near the Plan-de-Campagne commercial zone. The victim, a professional chief adjutant with the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS), suffered serious chest injuries from buckshot rounds.
Prosecutor Jean-Luc Blachon of Aix-en-Provence identified the suspect as a 51-year-old unemployed man described as being in social and familial rupture. He was living on an agricultural wasteland occupied by makeshift housing, caravans, and several vehicle wrecks. During his police custody, the man provided what prosecutors termed "confused explanations," stating he had decided to burn all his possessions and fired through trees specifically so that others would shoot at him.
Despite the suspect's account, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez raised the possibility of a different scenario during government questions at the National Assembly, suggesting the incident could have been an ambush. The suspect was eventually apprehended after retreating behind a mound and surrendering following interventions by a police officer and the RAID tactical unit. At the time of his arrest, he was found carrying 53 rounds in his pockets, and investigators recovered 11 spent 12-gauge cartridge casings at the scene.
Although the man had no prior criminal record, he was scheduled to appear before the Aix-en-Provence correctional court on Tuesday, November 3, for charges including weapons possession, death threats against a public authority official, and property damage. He has now been presented to an investigating judge facing charges of attempted murder of professional firefighters in the line of duty, destruction by dangerous means, and illegal possession of Category B weapons and ammunition. The prosecution has requested his placement in provisional detention.
